Why Michael Jackson Bad Was So Good.

I never ever thought I would write a post on the song “Bad” by the “king of pop.” I enjoy listening to songs sometimes and it would mostly be of my favorite singers. One of my favorite songs is by my favorite of all time, Michael Jackson’s “bad.” Also, this is late but a small tribute to the genius.

During this quarantine, I am on a Michael Jackson song marathon and keep going back to listening to all his songs from “off the wall” to MJ’s greatest hit “thriller,” and “Dangerous”. But of all his songs Bad will always be so close to me cause it was the first-ever Michael Jackson song I heard as a kid.

Here’s a childhood memory of my first and favorite MJ song:

So this was 1992 year in India when I was 8 years old and had heard about some American singer Michael Jackson as he was popular and at his peak then but never really heard his songs. I was staying in a small city in Maharashtra state where the entertainment industry wasn’t really a big thing. We watched some movies in theaters sometimes as it was the only way of some entertainment for me then. Also, there was one national channel we had on our TV’s which used to run on a schedule where they used to show documentaries, movies, series, entertainment shows, and news on some dedicated days of the week and time.

It was in the summer of 1992 and I remember one of my friends in school talking about a movie she saw with her family and how scary it was. It was the Indian horror movie “RAAT” (means “Night”) directed by one of the best directors of our country, Ram Gopal Verma, and starring the talented actress Revathy. So I decided to watch this movie as I used to like horror films, and some claimed it as one of the best and scariest horror films to come. I was curious to see what the hype is all about and decided to watch the movie.

Well, the movie did scare me as a kid, but this also became one of my favorite Hindi horror films. There were few reasons to it like the way this movie depicted the teen culture in India around that time which was new to me as a kid and also the fact this movie uses the Michael Jackson song “bad” in a scene.

There was a scene in a movie where after college the actress friend invites her to her room cause her dad just gifted her a new CD player on her birthday and to listen to Michael Jackson’s song “Bad” on it. Then after a few shots they were shown listening and dancing to the “bad” song.

This scene really caught my attention as that was the first time I ever heard MJ sing. After this movie, for a few years I tried really hard to get that song as those days there was no internet, and people around me hardly listen to English music.

Then after 2 years, I was on a vacation in Mumbai where I saw his “Bad” album audio cassette in a small audio and video library store. Finally, I purchased the cassette and kept listening to it on my Walkman every day. It was the best feeling I had and bought more cassettes and Michael Jackson’s CD’s over the years.

When I meet his fans, they say “thriller” or “off the wall” are their favorites but since “Bad” was my first encounter with his songs I like to say “Bad” is my most favorite Michael Jackson Song. Also, years later I saw the video of “Bad” and he looked so beautiful and perfect in it.

I always felt that “bad” was one of the most underrated Michael Jackson songs and also it was sad that they nominated this song for the grammy awards but only won the best-engineered song non-classical. Everything about this song was so bad awesome, his dance moves, his looks, his clothes, and his expressions were really really bad perfect and he really killed it in this song. I really hate saying this, how bad I miss Michael Jackson and his songs.

I remember the first time I saw MJ too! I watched a recording of Motown 25 when I was little and saw him sing Billie Jean and was hooked!
